Privacy Policy

This policy explains how we handle personal information when you visit the site or contact us by email.

1. Who operates this website

The website is operated by the owner of thenewlawyer.co.nz under the publication name The New Lawyer. For privacy requests or questions, email korero@thenewlawyer.co.nz. The site publishes information about New Zealand gambling law. It does not provide gambling accounts, accept wagers, or process deposits or payments.

2. Information you choose to send

The contact form is processed in your browser and opens a message in your default email application. The website itself does not submit the form to a server or store it in a website database. If you choose to send the email, your email provider and the service that receives our mailbox will process it.

A message may contain your name, email address, selected topic and whatever you write in the message. Please do not include passwords, payment details, identity documents, or sensitive health or gambling information unless it is necessary and you are comfortable sending it by email.

3. Technical information

The hosting provider may collect technical request information, such as IP address, requested page, date and time, browser details, and security events, to deliver and protect the service. What is collected and how long it is kept depend on the hosting provider.

The site does not currently use advertising or analytics cookies, or browser storage for visitor profiles. If you follow an external link, that organisation’s own privacy and cookie practices apply.

4. How information is used and shared

Email correspondence is used to respond to your enquiry, consider a correction or editorial comment, and keep a proportionate record of the exchange. We do not sell personal information or use it to advertise gambling products.

Information may be handled by hosting and email providers needed to operate the website and receive messages. We may also disclose information where required or authorised by law, or where reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety or the security of the site. A provider may process information outside New Zealand; any such disclosure must meet the requirements that apply under Information Privacy Principle 12 of the Privacy Act 2020.

5. Retention and security

We keep correspondence only for as long as it is reasonably needed to answer the enquiry, maintain an appropriate editorial record, or meet a legal requirement. Hosting logs and email backups may be retained by service providers under their own schedules. We take reasonable steps to protect information we control, but email and internet transmission cannot be guaranteed secure.

6. Access and correction

You may ask whether we hold personal information about you, request access to it, or ask us to correct it. Send your request to korero@thenewlawyer.co.nz and include enough detail for us to identify the relevant correspondence. We may ask for reasonable proof of identity before responding. Requests are handled under the Privacy Act 2020, including any applicable time limits, extensions and grounds for withholding information.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may raise the matter with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

7. Privacy breaches

If a privacy breach occurs, we will assess it and take reasonable steps to contain and reduce any harm. We will notify the Privacy Commissioner and affected individuals when the Privacy Act 2020 requires notification of a notifiable privacy breach.

8. External websites and policy updates

Links to other websites are provided for reference. We do not control their content, security or privacy practices. This policy may be updated when the site or its data handling changes. The date at the top of the page shows when it was last revised.
